Jacksonville International Airport Levelization
Location: Jacksonville, FL
Client: Jacksonville Aviation Authority
The Connector Bridge Levelization project replaced the connector bridge at the Jacksonville International Airport. The connector bridge, previously a dark, dated, and uncomfortably large extended ramp with a low ceiling, is located at a busy and continuously used “pinch point” between the land-side passenger check-in and the lower air-side security line. A seamless visual and physical transition, VIA Concepts’ design is a dramatic change – a modern, bright, and airy space that is comfortable, welcoming, and easy to navigate. The solution uses a combination of skylights & curtain walls to introduce daylight and drama into this area, and passengers are conveyed between levels with 4 escalators, 2 stairways, an ADA compliant ramp, and an elevator. Because airport operations occur not just inside the bridge with active passengers, but also beneath the bridge with tugs, automated conveyor systems and the linkage of mechanical systems, the design had to incorporate a temporary tunnel to keep traveler traffic moving through the airport at all hours of the day.
