JaxPort Security Operations Center
Location: Jacksonville, FL
Client: JaxPort
VIA Concepts served as the architect sub-consultant for Halcrow Inc, the prime managing firm of this project. VIA Concepts is the design architect and the architect of record for this project. The Security Operations Center houses the JaxPort security team, and provides offices for the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office and Florida Sheriffs Office. This 24 hour facility also includes a secure training center, interrogation rooms, and temporary living quarters.
The Security Operation Center is composed of two basic elements. The exterior “ring” of the building was constructed of used intermodal shipping containers. The innermost functions such as the training and communications rooms are of typical steel construction. VIA Concepts’ scheme using intermodal shipping containers allowed the client to build the facility within its budget and time requirements without compromising the scope or building program. It also allowed the building to be a reflection of what the client specializes in: the business of shipping containers.
The Green Equation: Value-Cycling is taking a product that has fulfilled a primary purpose and finding another use without spending significant new energy and resources to convert it. The project process uses the value and power of thought to recycle containers into a useful “green” product – with minimal amounts of energy. This is a commitment of the project team. Specifically it takes 8000 kwh to melt down an 8000 lb container and fabricate new beams and steel from it. It only takes 5% of that energy (400kwh) to re-purpose a container into a material suitable for a building. Although this is not a LEED certified building, the design of the project uses sustainable elements.
