Superskyscraper Competition – NYC
Location: New York City, NY
Client: SuperSkyScraper
This open competition, hosted by SuperSkyScraper, invited architects to design an inspirational, high quality hotel and “sky garden” development with the intention of setting a new bar for urban/contemporary high-rise building design in the Manhattanville neighborhood in New York City. VIA Concepts’ entry draws inspiration from Manhattan’s bridge heritage and reflects/reacts to the existing fabric of the city. There are physical tie-ins with the subway, the activities of Broadway and Columbia University, and the neighborhood of Manhattanville. As the site reaches westward toward the Hudson River, it is more open with various levels of greenery and activities within the hotel structure. The site is bounded by bridges or viaducts on the western and eastern edges, images that evoke the history of NYC. The hotel’s structure uses recycled materials, natural materials, includes features like cisterns for supporting gardens, and passive design features that promote energy savings. The site also includes extensive garden/green spaces, an office tower, conference center, retail, and a parking garage.
